KEY WEST, Fla. (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people fled Florida's west coast on Friday as Hurricane Charley charged toward land with powerful 110 mph winds threatening to whip up a 14-foot storm surge.
Charley hammered Cuba and raked the tourist island of Key West before moving toward the U.S. mainland on a path that would take it ashore later on Friday on the low-lying Gulf coast near Tampa Bay, an area particularly vulnerable to flooding.
Florida authorities issued evacuation warnings to as many as 2 million people potentially at risk.
